Day 1

Demonstrations
  1. Checking Grainline
  2. Pattern Markings
  3. Transfering Markings to Fabric
  4. Cutting a Pattern
  5. Fabric Scissors vs. Paper Scissors
Student Activities
  • Measure Grainline on Each Pattern Piece Before Cutting
  • Transfer All Markings to Wrong Side of Fabric
  • Cut Out All Pattern Pieces

Day 2

Demonstrations
  1. Threading the Machine
  2. Serger Operation
  3. Industrial Iron Operation
Student Activities
  • Press Interfacing (Piece D) onto Piece H
  • Serge all Edges EXCEPT CURVED EDGES (PIECE H), TOP OF PLEATED POCKET (PIECE B), and BAG BASE (PIECE A)
  • Machine Stitch Curved Seam (Pieces H and D)
  • Clip, Turn, and Press Curved Seam

Day 3

Demonstrations
  1. Hand Hems
  2. Catch Stitch
  3. Whip Stitch
  4. Slip Stitch
Student Activities
  • Turn & Press Top Hem of Triple Pocket (Piece F)
  • Turn & press top hem of little double pocket(Piece E)
  • Whip Stitch Hem of Triple Pocket
  • Slip Stitch Hem of Little Double Pocket
  • Catch Stitch Curved Facing to Pocket
  • Turn and press top hem of pleated pocket (Piece B)

Day 4

Demonstration
  1. Hand Basting
Student Activities
  • Machine Stitch Top Hem of Pleated Pocket (Piece B)
  • Pleat, Pin, and Hand Baste Pleated Pocket
  • Turn and Stitch Casing of Gathered Pocket (Piece C)
  • Attach Pleated Pocket to bag base by lining up with markings and machine basting on three sides outside of SA
  • Following markings, pin and stitch center and side stitching lines
  • Stitch bottom seam of curved pocket to bag base right sides together, pocket upside down
  • Fold up curved pocket and press
  • Machine Baste sides of curved pocket outside of SA
  • Machine Stitch Center Line of Curved Pocket

Day 5

Student Activities
  • Press SA under on small double pocket on stitching line
  • Top Stitch small double pocket in place matching corners and stitching lines
  • Stitch bottom seam of triple pocket
  • Fold up and press triple pocket
  • Baste SS to bag base outside of SA on triple pocket
  • Top Stitch two center stitching lines of triple pocket
  • Tape Vinyl pocket in place
  • Top Stitch Vinyl Pocket in place along tape line on three sides
  • Top Stitch second row 1 Presser Foot width away from first stitching line. An index card should be able to fit into this pocket

Day 6

Demonstrations
  1. Gathering
  2. Threading Elastic
Student Activities
  • Machine Baste gathering stitches into bottom of gathered pocket following line marked on pattern DO NOT BACKSTITCH!
  • Pin Gathered Pocket to base lining up stitching lines & center line
  • Gather bottom of Gathered Pocket to fit smoothly along bag base by pulling up bobbin thread
  • Pin in place
  • Stitch gathers onto bag outside of SA
  • Machine base gathers onto bag inside SA
  • Using safety pins, thread 1/4" elastic through casing created earlier and secure with pins
  • Machine baste SS of gathered pocket outside of SA BE SURE TO BACKSTITCH ON ELASTIC
  • Stitch center lines of gathered pocket

Day 7

Demonstrations
  1. Buttonholes
  2. Bias Tape
Student Activities
  • Mark and practice two button holes on scrap muslin
  • Mark and stitch button hole as noted on pattern
  • Cut open button hole
  • Press open one side of bias tape
  • Pin fold line along stitching line of bag base
  • Stitch in place
  • Trim SA
  • Fold to other side, pin, stitch
  • Repeat bias tape procedure on other side

Day 8

Student Activities
  • Fold garment bag base in half on center line. Pin and stitch darts.
  • Pin and stitch side seams
  • Serge side seams
  • Remove all VISIBLE basting stitches
  • Sign your name on your bag with a Rub-a-Dub
  • Turn bag right side out and insert hanger into position
